The mentor ministry was established to provide youth the opportunity
to interact with positive adult role models on a regular basis.
Mentors, committed to making a difference in the lives of our youth,
are asked to serve for no less than one academic year. A minimum
of three monthly contacts with their respective youth and participation
in monthly activities with other mentors and young people is expected.
Mentors are required to attend orientation and training sessions.
Further, mentors are subject to a reference and background check
before being assigned to a young person.
The mentor ministry has a second component, the focus of which
is academics. A biweekly tutorial session (Study Hall) is held at
McKinley School on Monday and Thursday evenings.
Mentors meet once a month to hand in monthly mentor logs, report
on progress and discuss any problems or concerns. A yearly calendar
of all events and meetings is distributed the first meeting of the
year.
The organization is as follows: program coordinator, mentor-mentee
chair, academics chair, secretary, activity coordinator, after school
coordinator and training/recruiter coordinator. The program coordinator(s)
has oversight of the Mentor Ministry, attends the monthly Discipleship
meeting and serves as liaison between mentor and parents. The academic
chair makes copies of report cards, sends the same to the Director
of Discipleship, and makes recommendations for Study Hall per the
report cards. The activity coordinator plans and coordinates monthly
activities. The after school coordinator reserves rooms for Study
Hall, takes attendance and reports discipline problems to the program
coordinator(s). The training/recruiter coordinator recruits mentors
and arranges for mentor training sessions.
Study Hall, a part of the Mentoring Program, is run collaboratively
with Tutorial
Services. For times and locations of tutoring sessions, please
contact the church office.
The Pastor requires every student to submit his/her report card
for review at the end of each grading period.
