FBC Online Team

Sunday Morning

Baby Dedication Sunday: Christian parents who dedicate a child are making a promise to the Lord to do everything within their power to raise a child in a Godly way, prayerfully until he or she can make a decision on his or her own to follow God. Parents who make this vow of commitment are instructed to raise the child in the ways of God, and not according to their own ways.

Ministry Spotlight

The Online Ministry engages and equips technology professionals within the church to use their skills in website development for linking both local and global communities for worship and ministry. The ministry encompasses site creation, maintenance and enhancement, as well as the addition of new features to the church's and affiliate websites. Plans are underway for re-engaging members who were trained in the last year to support the old website and to seek out others within the congregation and community who possess web development skills. For more information, e-mail Iva Croston at hicroston@aol.com.

Scripture

Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them. Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.

Matthew 19:13-15 (NIV)

CeCe Winans to perform Aug. 15 at FBCLG

Gospel great CeCe Winans is expected to perform at the 9 a.m. service Aug. 15 at FBCLG.

She will sing "The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power" for the upcoming CNN documentary, "Churched," that will air Oct. 14.

"Pastor Soaries has been a dear friend to me and my family for many years and I am both honored and humbled that he would ask me to participate in the CNN Black In America documentary focusing on FBCLG. I am sure it will be a tremendous blessing to all who see it," Mrs. Winans said.

The event is free and open to the public.

Mid-Year Church Meeting Reveals Progress on Mortgage

Members of First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens met last Wednesday for the Mid-Year Church Business Meeting where they received financial updates for the last year.

Trustee Board Treasurer Herman G. Johnson reported that the church in January paid an additional $250,000 toward the mortgage principle.

“That payment alone will save the church $780,000 in interest and will reduce the balloon payment by $595,000 if we continue at the current monthly payment level with no additional capital payments,” he said. “In keeping with our objective to pay off the mortgage loan as quickly as possible, we hope to be making capital payments whenever the cash flow permits.”

Formal counseling component added to FBCLG

Seeing a growing need in both the congregation and community, leaders at First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens added a formal counseling component to its services.

Dr. William Campbell was recently hired as director of counseling for First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens (FBCLG). While he has already started working with church members and the public, Dr. Campbell is working with church officials to eventually open a FBCLG counseling center.

“There is nothing more important for a church than to be there when people need you. Pastoral care is one of the most important components to a church,” said Dr. DeForest B. Soaries, Jr., senior pastor of FBCLG.

Campbell will help the congregation and the public address their counseling and wellness needs by offering initial assessments and short-term counseling.

“We rely on our faith to get us through things, and that’s a good thing, but the church and pastor cannot meet all the emotional and mental wellness needs of a rapidly growing membership and community,” Campbell said. “Assistance is sometimes needed from professionally trained therapists and counselors to help people achieve greater emotional and mental wellness by providing compassionate care.”

Health

Easy portion control - Use your hand

Portion control is an important part of losing or managing your weight. You may be surprised to learn the portion size that you are used to eating may be equal to two or three standard servings. You may find it helpful to use common everyday objects to help estimate serving sizes.

Here are a few handy tips: 1 teaspoon of margarine or oil is about the size of your fingertip (tip to first joint); an average cupped hand is about ½ cup of fruit, vegetables or cooked rice; an average palm is about 3 ounces of meat or poultry.

C. G. Wooding Ministry Blood Pressure Screening offered every Sunday

The C.G. Wooding Ministry will be taking blood pressure screenings every Sunday. Please join them in the First Aid Room after the 7, 9 and 11 a.m. services.

Walking Tips

A pedometer counts the number of steps you take. It can be a great motivating tool, helping you to increase your activity, track your progress and reach your goals. A pedometer can show you that even small steps can move you toward better health.

Four ways to get a hiring manager's attention

You've done everything right in your job hunt: You've built your professional network, your résumé is error-free and your online reputation is spotless. You think you've done a good job of marketing your skills and experience to prospective employers. But despite your best efforts, you're still searching.

Following are some suggestions to help you get noticed and distinguish yourself from the crowd of other applicants:

Become an expert: Building a reputation as an expert in your chosen niche might take less effort than you think. The key is to start small. Consider contributing to blogs that are targeted to individuals in your profession.

Optimize your social networking profile: If you have a presence on LinkedIn or similar websites, make sure your work history is thorough and up-to-date. Integrate keywords that describe your skills, specialties and positions of interest.

Go old school: If you submit your résumé to an online job board or company's website, consider following up by sending the employer a printed copy of your résumé on high-quality stationery. Or, after meeting with a hiring manager in person, send a handwritten thank-you note instead of an e-mail.

Work with a recruiter: A recruiter can be an excellent partner in a job search because these individuals work with hiring managers all day, every day. That means they have existing relationships with -- and inside access to -- the people you are hoping to reach.
