Welcome to First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens' online newsletter! Each week, you will find out what's happening on Sunday, a new ministry will be highlighted and you can be inspired by a Bible verse. dfree Celebration: Pastor Soaries, the congregation and special guests are expected to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of dfree Sunday. The dfree Ministry will have a dfree moment at the 7 and 9 a.m. services and a special program for the 11 a.m. service. There will be a reception immediately following the 11 a.m. service in the Fellowship Hall. Reserve your spot at the reception by clicking here.

Ministry Spotlight

The Pre-Marriage Ministry is a series of nine group counseling sessions for couples planning to get married at FBC or by a FBC minister. Topics range from financial management for couples to marriage expectations and communicating with your spouse. Every couple takes an online inventory assessment, which identifies relationship strengths and weaknesses. The Christian-focused sessions prepare couples to be pro-active in dealing with martial issues in their relationship.

FBCLG's member prays to turn 100 July 14

Dorothy Reynolds Hudspeth has spent her life making up for lost time.

She started driving at 47 and landed her dream job when most people are looking forward to retirement. But when you live to be 99, you can take your time with life.

Hudspeth hopes to turn 100 on July 14.

Other than the daily vitamins, medicine and plenty of water, Hudspeth said there has always been one constant in her life that keeps her going – God.

“God keeps me going every day,” she said. “God has blessed me to go through many changes. I thank God everyday that I’m alive. I say to myself ‘I’m getting close (to 100), but I want to make it.’”

Hudspeth will celebrate her birthday with family and friends Saturday, July 10 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Piscataway.

Airline miles bank created

First Baptist Church is planning three more trips this year - to Ghana and twice to Haiti - but church leaders need your help getting there.

Many of you have unused airline miles or points from credit cards that can be redeemed for miles. First Baptist is starting an airline mileage bank for the trips.

Pastor Soaries is seeking mileage donations and requesting you use your points to purchase tickets for First Baptist.

The trip to Ghana is planned for August. We will continue to build upon our existing relationship with King Okyenhene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin. Two trips are planned for Haiti. The first, of which the date hasn't been set, will be a follow-up to our trip in the Spring, and the second will be in December, when First Baptist's college students are expected to do missions work there.

The Saturday Academy begins this weekend - it's not too late to register

The Saturday Academy, a partnership between FBC Youth and the Central Jersey Community Development Corporation, begins Saturday and runs for seven weeks. It's open to students in grades 5-9 and will take place at First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens.

There will be a daily Academic Hour, which will provide students with on-going education outside of the classroom.

There will also be an Enrichment Hour led by Stand & Deliver, a dynamic professional development training and coaching group.

The program is $15 a week per student and $99 if you register for the entire summer session. There is a special discount for students participating in their Free/Reduced Lunch Program.

Deep discounts offered for TAPS' Leadership Academy

Officials with TAPS' Leadership Academy slashed the camp fee from $200 to $100 a week, eliminated the registration fee and added a trip to the Delaware Water Gap each week.

TAPS (Teens Abstaining and Positioning Self) is offering three week-long leadership camps this summer that will feature ways to create effective habits of a leader; ways to build healthy relationships; comprehensive planning and goal setting sessions; dynamic speakers and trips to the Delaware Water Gap.

The TAPS Leadership Academy is for children age 12 to 18. The Leadership Academy is offered from July 19-23; 26-30 and Aug. 9-13.

Choosing foods that contain whole grains, vitamins C and E, and omega-3 fatty acids may protect against vision loss due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other sight-robbing diseases.

C. G. Wooding Ministry Blood Pressure Screening offered every Sunday

The C.G. Wooding Ministry will be taking blood pressure screenings every Sunday. Please join them in the First Aid Room after the 7, 9 and 11 a.m. services.

 

5 Strategies for Weight Loss

1. Exercise. Research has shown that three 10-minute sessions in a day are as good as one 30-minute session.
2. Keep a food diary. Devote some time each day to record what and how much you have eaten.
3. Stay focused on being healthy, not on becoming thin.
Change your mindset to think about selecting foods that will help your body's health rather than worrying about foods that will affect your body’s weight.
4. Portion Control. Divide the normal amount of food you eat in half.
5. Eating slowly can lead to weight loss. From the time you begin eating it takes the brain 20 minutes to start signaling feelings of fullness.

Hope and HealingIf you deserve a raise, ask for one

No one has to tell you that things are tough around the office. Ever since your team's headcount was slashed, you've put in extra hours and taken on additional projects without complaining. You deserve a raise, but in this time of constrained budgets, is it safe to ask?

Timing is important

Most companies have a budgeting cycle; be aware of it. Come in two months before, not two weeks after, the company has made raise decisions. Do not ask on a Friday afternoon or before a vacation; your arguments will be long forgotten by the time your boss returns to work or presents your case to those above him. Do not ask during a crisis.

Prepare your case

Determine your best arguments, such as how hard you have worked, what you have accomplished, or how you have mentored others. Learn about the pay system and find out how discretionary decisions are made. Try to determine what others make. Anticipate your bosses' arguments.

Women's Month - "Sisters Breaking down the Walls"

First Baptist Church is celebrating Women's Month in July with a number of activities.

Joy Night, which will feature spoken word and liturgical dancers, will be celebrated at 7:15 p.m. Friday, July 9 at the church. And the women will be back at church at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 10 to hear Dr. Teresa Hairston, author of "How to Pursue your Purpose" and publisher of Gospel Today magazine.

From 6 am. to 6 p.m., on July 13, women will be observing a Day of Fasting. Prayer will take place at noon in the Chapel.

Another Day of Fasting will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 20 and dinner to break the fast will be served at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. At 7:15 p.m., Sisters - Standing in the Gap (S-SIG) will meet at the prayer wall in the Chapel for a worship service.

On Saturday, July 24 at 5 a.m., there will be a sunrise S-SIG at Colonial Park.

July 18 and 25 Women of the Week will be recognized.

The month will wrap up with a Women's Day service on July 25 at the 7, 9, and 11 a.m. services. Rev. Millicent Wess will be the guest preacher for the 9 and 11 a.m. services.

"Summer with the Son" series begins this month

First Baptist Church is offering a number of activities, workshops and programs in July and August. From Women's Month, Summer Renewal, the 5th anniversary and dfree, to Pastor Soaries preaching every service every Sunday in August. There will be worship opportunties for all ages.

"We take summer as seriously as the rest of the year. There is something going on straight through the summer. We're using this summer for the glory of God," said Pastor Soaries.

Join the dfree Ministry this month in celebrating the 5th Anniversary of dfree - no debt, no deficits, no delinquencies.

There will be a dfree moment during the 7, 9, and 11 a.m. services on July 11. Special guest Dr. Teresa Hairston, publisher of "Gospel Today" magazine, is expected at the 11 a.m. service.

Accelerated dfree Summer class offered

The dfree Ministry is offering an accelerated level 1 class this summer from 7-8:30 p.m., on Tuesdays from July 6-27 in the seminar room. The curriculum is "Learn God’s Way of Managing Money."

Women Without Walls Ministry hosts Dr. Teresa Hairston

The Women Without Walls Ministry invites the women of First Baptist to hear Dr. Teresa Hairston's inspirational story Saturday, July 10 in the Chapel.

Dr. Hairston is the founder and publisher of Gospel Today, a magazine she started with $400, while raising three children as a single mother. She's also the author of "How to Pursue Your Purpose."

The event will begin at 10 a.m. in the Chapel and will include a question-and-answer session. At 11 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall, there will be a book signing and magazine subscription drive. Refreshments will also be served.

Summer Renewal begins Monday

Summer Renewal 2010, formerly known as Vacation Bible School, is from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m., July 12-16. There will be classes for all ages. The theme is "20/20 Vision" for teens and adults and "Going Green with Jesus" for all other classes.

Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served from 6-7 p.m. Friday, July 12.

College Sunday

The Youth Ministry and Crossroads College Ministry
will present “College Sunday” at the 11 a.m. service July 18 in the Sanctuary.

Everyone is asked to represent your college by wearing T-shirts and paraphernalia.

Volunteers needed for the new bookstore

The new bookstore is expected to open in the next few months, but the Bookstore Ministry is looking for volunteers now. Volunteers are needed to work three to six hours a week on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Volunteers will assist customers, work with inventory and stock shelves.
