July 1, 2010

Dear friend,

Welcome to First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens' online newsletter! Each week, you will find out what's happening on Sunday, a new ministry will be highlighted and you can be inspired by a Bible verse. Periodically, there will be pastoral care, membership and health and wellness announcements. We hope you find the enhanced newsletter exciting and informative!

Sunday is Communion Sunday.

FBC Online Team

Sunday Morning

Communion Sunday: There are three main Christian views regarding the bread and wine during the practice of Communion: The bread and the wine become the actual body and blood of Christ; the bread and wine are unchanged elements, but Christ's presence by faith is made spiritually real in and through them and the bread and wine are unchanged elements, used as symbols, representing Christ's body and blood, in remembrance of his enduring sacrifice.

Ministry Spotlight

The Resource Center/Bookstore Ministry is currently working to open the first bookstore at First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens. The bookstore will be located on the first floor of the building and will offer Christian books and gifts. The bookstore was made possible through a $35,000 donation to the church's Capital Campaign. The bookstore is expected to be open in the next several weeks. To join this ministry or to volunteer to work in the bookstore, please e-mail Yvonne Suber at ysuber@aol.com.

Scripture

Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."

John 6: 53-54 (NIV)

The Scholarship Ministry awards nearly $42,000 in college funds

The First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens’ Scholarship Ministry awarded 11 students scholarships Sunday ranging from $200 to $3,600.

The ministry, which fundraises throughout the year, was founded 41 years ago and has given away about $50,000 each year over the last 10 years to young people headed to college.

Willie Roberson, who plans to major in political science at the University of Rochester, said the scholarship is a “blessing.”

“It’s so great that the church can give money away because college is very expensive. It’s a lot of money. It can cover my books and a laptop,” said the South Brunswick High School graduate, who received $3,600.

Roberson said he chose the University of Rochester because of its top political science program and he will be able to continue to play football.

Airline miles bank created

First Baptist Church is planning three more trips this year - to Ghana and twice to Haiti - but church leaders need your help getting there.

Many of you have unused airline miles or points from credit cards that can be redeemed for miles. First Baptist is starting an airline mileage bank for the trips.

Pastor Soaries is seeking mileage donations and requesting you use your points to purchase tickets for First Baptist.

The trip to Ghana is planned for August. We will continue to build upon our existing relationship with King Okyenhene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin. Two trips are planned for Haiti. The first, of which the date hasn't been set, will be a follow-up to our trip in the Spring, and the second will be in December, when First Baptist's college students are expected to do missions work there.

Pastor Soaries hopes you are willing to help First Baptist make an impact in two areas of the world in need. If you have miles to donate or are willing to purchase a ticket for the church, please contact Linda Bennett at lbennett@fbcsomerset.com.

Health

Eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables daily

Greens: Greens are packed with calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc, vitamins A, C, E and K, and they help strengthen the blood and respiratory systems. Be adventurous with your greens and branch out beyond bright and dark green lettuce—kale, mustard greens, broccoli and Chinese cabbage are just a few of the options.

Sweet vegetables: Naturally sweet vegetables add healthy sweetness to your meals and reduce your cravings for other sweets. Some examples are corn, carrots, beets, sweet potatoes or yams, winter squash and onions.

Fruit: A wide variety of fruit is also vital to a healthy diet. Fruit provides fiber, vitamins and antioxidants. Berries are cancer-fighting, apples provide fiber, oranges and mangos offer vitamin C.

C. G. Wooding Ministry Blood Pressure Screening offered every Sunday

The C.G. Wooding Ministry will be taking blood pressure screenings every Sunday. Please join them in the First Aid Room after the 7, 9 and 11 a.m. services.

Stretch into shape

Stretching keeps your muscles flexible, helping to prepare them for exercise and recover from the effort afterward. Skip the stretches, and you won't get nearly the benefits you should from aerobic exercise and resistance training.

Pastoral Care

Bereavement information is now on the web

Information on what to do when a loved one dies is now on the FBC website at http://fbcsomerset.com.

Hope and HealingAre you overqualified?

Scouting through job listings, you spot a position in your field. The employer is looking for somebody with a bachelor's degree and four years of relevant experience. Having a master's degree and seven years under your belt. You hurry to apply, figuring that your higher credentials will at least score an interview.

But your phone never rings. Instead of working to your advantage, being overqualified for a job can be a red flag that keeps employers from wanting to know you better. While it may be difficult to overcome their objectives, knowing the basis for their concerns can help make your job search more fruitful.

The money issue: Money is a key reason people work. Even if you are willing to settle for a lower salary because of the tough economy, employers worry that you will jump ship as soon as you find another position offering compensation more in line with what you are used to earning.

Long-term plans: The hiring manager will assume on the long term the lower-level job will not meet your needs or you won't fit into the structure. The manager might also feel threatened if you are qualified to do his or her job.

If you haven't turned in your Summer Covenant pledge card, you can now fill it out online.

The cards will also be handed out every Sunday this month in preparation for the 10 weeks of summer, which Pastor Soaries will ask members to remain faithful to the admonition of Malachi 3:10 by continuing to give tithes and offerings. Malachi 3:10 - "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it."

Volunteers needed for Summer Renewal

Volunteers are needed for Summer Renewal from July 12-16, 2010.

Instructors are needed for Pre-K, elementary and middle school ages.

Summer Renewal, formerly known as Vacation Bible School, provides time to enjoy Bible study during the summer when most Sunday School and Bible study classes are in recess for summer vacation. It provides programs for all ages - nursery through adult.

Because First Baptist sees Summer Renewal as a time of learning and fun for students of all ages, the curriculum is both age and theme appropriate.

Summer Renewal provides a nursery program for two-year-olds, a pre-school program for three- and four-year olds, an elementary program for 1st through 6th graders, a junior high program for 7th and 8th graders and a senior high program for teens in the 9th through the 12th grades.

To volunteer or for more information, contact Wanda Boyd at wboyd@fbcsomerset.com.
